I was going to write this article about the techniques that bring rapid transformation.
I intended to dazzle you with my advice about using EFT for emotional healing, dieting to get your mental biochemistry functioning effectively, yoga to keep your body active and meditation to bring inner reflection and peace.
I was going to tell you that it’s far more important to look at your whole body and your whole life to find the areas where you can achieve rapid changes in your health and happiness with very little effort and to work on those areas first.
Then it occurred to me that you’ve probably heard it all before, tried it all before and yet here you are still seeking transformation. And what you really want to know is what it the biggest key to long term transformation…the real secret to lasting change.
If you’re at all human I know you’ve wondered why making long term, lasting change is so difficult.
I’ll even bet you’ve experienced many short term transformations in your life.
You take on a new diet and you lose weight. Your physical body is transformed. You wonder how you managed to lug around all that extra weight before and marvel out how alive your new slimmer body feels.
You fall in love and your emotions are transformed. Whereas the day before the world was common place now you’re seeing the beauty and wonder in everything around you! You hear the birds singing, you see the deep blue in the sky and you feel the sunshine tingling on your skin. You never knew you could be so utterly happy.
Or you go to a retreat or a workshop and you get in touch with yourself and the spirit inside you. You feel fully connected, at one with the world. For a precious time you radiate with inner peace.
But these blissful inner states pass.
Forget about your diet for a few weeks and the weight piles right back on.
Wonderful feelings like being in love fade, then disappear altogether leaving just the ghost of a memory.
Why is it so hard in our fast paced, high technology, highly educated western culture to achieve long term transformation?
We have access to an ocean of information, most of it free if you just go online. Why can’t we seem to use that information to change ourselves?
The real key is in understanding the driving forces behind our culture and how they pull you away from inner peace and towards a state that is both unhealthy and unhappy.
Western society was built on the concept of growth and progress. Based on our current economic model heavy consumption and economic growth is good for business and good for our economy.
But living in a consumer driven culture means we’re constantly being pushed and persuaded in a million subtle and not so subtle ways to want more, buy more and consume more.
When things are a bit rocky with our spouse, our partner or our children we just need to melt away our troubles with the latest name brand chocolate.
I know you’ve seen those ads too where the world’s going to hell, you eat the latest chocolate and like magic you’re sipping pina coladas on a beach in the Bahamas.
When we gain weight because we eat too many of those chocolates (no doubt looking for that magical Bahama experience) the solution is to spend money on the latest exercise machine or membership in the latest, most exclusive gym.
If things really get bad and our emotions are shot (probably because our family just doesn’t appreciate the very real value of sitting around the house stuffing our faces with chocolate all day) what we really need is a night of heavy drinking to anesthetize ourselves.
Don’t worry you won’t be alone. It’s accepted behavior in the western world to drink your troubles away. You can find company and encouragement to drink every night of the week!
It doesn’t matter which direction you take there are always forces in western culture pushing you to buy more and consume more. And some of those forces actually encourage self destructive behavior.
And that’s our biggest problem. That’s why it’s so tremendously difficult to achieve long term transformation.
We have the best intentions but humans were never meant to battle in this world alone.
We belong in a supportive tribe. People who pull together and help to keep us on track.
And the biggest secret to long term, lasting transformation is to get together on a regular basis with other like minded, supportive people who will help you to grow mentally and spiritually.
People who are happy drinking tea, coffee or just water (heaven forbid!).
People who will sit with you, share with you, listen to you, build you up when you’re feeling down, laugh with you when you’re feeling good and cheer you on when you’re triumphant.
You need to be around people you can share time with without worrying about the clock or the kids or any of the other problems in your life. You need to be with other human beings who really care about you and you need the chance to give back to them in the same way.
It’s not a coincidence that every major religion, every university and every major weight loss program are all based on the idea of like minded individuals working and sharing time together.
The secret Tibetan monks, Harvard University and Weight Watchers have discovered is that for profound physical, mental and spiritual transformation you need a support group of people around you.
You simply can’t go it alone in this world.
So the biggest key to long term transformation is to regularly meet with supportive, uplifting people who are seeking transformation in many areas of their lives just as you are.
